What is Shop Pay?
Shop Pay is an accelerated checkout service created by Shopify. It allows customers to save their email address, credit card, and shipping and billing information. The next time they shop at any store that supports Shop Pay, they can complete their purchase in one click without re-entering their details.
Why Shop Pay Increases Conversion Rates
Standard checkouts require customers to fill out an average of 14 form fields. This friction leads to cart abandonment, especially on mobile devices. Shop Pay reduces this to a simple email verification (often via a 6-digit text code or biometric login like FaceID).
According to Shopify's data, checkouts going through Shop Pay have an average order-to-checkout rate 1.72x higher than standard checkouts.
Shop Pay Installments (Buy Now, Pay Later)
Shop Pay also includes an optional "Installments" feature, competing with services like Klarna and Afterpay. It allows customers to split their purchase into four bi-weekly, interest-free payments, or into monthly installments for larger purchases. For the merchant, the full transaction amount (minus fees) is paid upfront, offloading the credit risk to Shop Pay's financial partners.
Enabling Shop Pay on Headless Stores
While Shop Pay is native to Shopify, integrating it into a custom Headless Commerce build requires specific API handling via the Storefront API. Our engineers ensure the accelerated checkout flow remains seamless and secure even when the frontend is decoupled from Shopify.
